“Colorful Land”, featuring Ella Blame, is the latest single from Canadian independent project Animal Souls and the first preview of an upcoming album, The Abyss, expected in November 2026.

The song marks the beginning of a new direction for the project, with a stronger focus on synth-influenced sounds. It also comes at a particularly personal moment for Michael Fisher, the bassist and producer behind Animal Souls, who had planned to spend more time promoting the release but had to step back due to family circumstances.

Based in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Animal Souls has never been a project that stays in one genre for too long. Fisher approaches each song on its own terms, allowing the instrumentation and arrangement to follow what the track needs rather than trying to fit everything into a particular style.

That approach can be heard throughout the project's music. A song might feature flute, dobro, violin, layered synthesizers, or more familiar rock instrumentation, and the next track can sound completely different. There is no fixed formula, which has become one of the defining characteristics of Animal Souls.

Fisher has been writing and performing music since the late 1970s, but it wasn't until more recently that he began recording and producing his own material seriously. The COVID-19 pandemic became an unexpected turning point. After retiring from a 27-year career at Live Nation Entertainment, he was able to dedicate himself to music full-time.

Since then, Animal Souls has released the 10-track album Wisdom of Crowds, the two-track EP Take Me Home, and several singles. With “Colorful Land”, the project begins moving toward The Abyss, an album that will explore Fisher's interest in synthesizer-driven music while continuing the genre-fluid approach that has shaped Animal Souls from the beginning.

Rather than following a specific sound, Animal Souls continues to let each song determine its own direction. “Colorful Land” offers the first glimpse of where that approach may lead next.
