The release also carries a personal tribute to Ernest Ranglin, the legendary Jamaican guitarist whom C’batch had the opportunity to meet at Heathrow Airport in 2001. That encounter gives the project an additional connection to the musical tradition that inspired its creation, grounding the EP in a lasting appreciation for reggae and its history.
Born creatively out of New York's rich musical landscape, C’batch—whose full name is Stephen H. Cumberbatch—is a composer, producer, guitarist, and programmer whose work spans R&B, soul, funk, dance, reggae, jazz-influenced music, and cinematic soundscapes. His career reaches back to the influential New York club scene of the early 1980s, with published works including Sinnamon's “I Need You Now,” NV's “Let Me Do You,” Kreamsicle's “Playgirls,” and Eleanore Mills' “Geisha Love.”
“I Need You Now,” featuring Bernard Fowler, became a lasting club recording and was subsequently sampled extensively in electronic and dance music. “Let Me Do You,” featuring Will Downing, also became associated with the era, receiving a celebrated mix by Shep Pettibone.
In 1984, C’batch and Yvette founded Stevette Music, Inc., an independent publishing, production, and record company that continues to support his catalogue and creative work four decades later. His current projects reflect that independent spirit, bringing together archival material, new production, and visual storytelling. In 2026, his music video “Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling/You’ve Got Me Falling)” received an Honorable Mention for Best Pop Music Video at the International Music Video Awards.
With The Vault, C’batch is exploring a different relationship with his own catalogue. The series moves across genres and periods, allowing ideas conceived years ago to find new meaning in the present. “I Guess You Want It This Way” embodies that approach: a composition shaped by personal encouragement, preserved through decades of creative life, and finally completed on its own terms.
Sometimes, returning to the past is not about recreating what once was. It is about discovering what a song can become when the time is finally right.
