More than three decades after its original release, Utah pop-rock band Elysian Fields is giving new life to its album “Definition,” introducing the record to a worldwide audience for the first time.
Originally released in 1995, the album became a favorite within Utah's local music scene and earned praise for its melodic songwriting, heartfelt performances, and emotional depth.
Recorded with acclaimed producer Cliff Maag, “Definition” was praised by the Deseret News, which described it as a "breath of fresh air" and a record worthy of any local music collection.
At the core of the album were the songwriting talents of Mark Roos and James Shumway, paired with the powerful vocals of Kerri Murray. Together, they created songs that explored love, dreams, heartbreak, nature, and the shared experiences that connect people.

Elysian Fields

The story of Elysian Fields began in 1993 when Roos and Shumway reunited to write music after previously playing together in high school. Their search for a vocalist led them to Murray, who had recently moved to Utah from Arizona.
Confident in the music they were creating, the group made the unusual decision to record a full-length album before performing a single live show.
The band's name was inspired by the paradise of Greek mythology, reflecting the uplifting and reflective spirit that would define their music.
Following the album's release, Elysian Fields performed throughout Utah and built a loyal following. Songs such as “Staying with You,” “Wings to Fly,” “My Fantasy,” “Take My Hand,” and “Desert Sky” became fan favorites and helped establish the band's reputation.
Although the group disbanded in 1996 after a relatively short run, “Definition” remains a lasting testament to their creativity and musicianship.
Now re-released for modern audiences, the album offers listeners a chance to rediscover a hidden gem from the 1990s—one whose themes of love, hope, and human connection remain just as relevant today as they were when it first appeared.
