MAGUA

born in portugal

Magua is once again showing how his project keeps evolving with a new live version of “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings,” a song originally by Father John Misty. This release, which comes with a music video, came about very spontaneously and turned into a really deep and personal take on the song.

The idea came to Magua after he saw Father John Misty play live for KEXP. Josh Tillman's performance and songwriting really got to him, so Magua decided to try something out during a rehearsal, using a 12-string bass and a drum machine. What started as just messing around eventually became its own thing because of the strong feelings the song brought out.

Instead of trying to copy the original, Magua makes it his own with his unique sound—a mix of breakbeat, punk, electronic music, hardcore punk, grunge, folk, and funk. The way he combines harmonica, vocals, a drum machine, and bass creates a really unique contrast between raw noise and truly sad, thoughtful parts. You can definitely hear that contrast in this new version too.

Magua is from Kyiv, Ukraine. The project started back in 2007 as a three-person band that focused on touring and making new music in the local scene. He released the album “AGATA” in 2016, and over the years, the project changed and became a solo act in 2018. Ever since then, his music has kept changing and growing, exploring different styles but always keeping a strong emotional core.

A lot of his recent work has been shaped by the war and what's happening in Ukraine. Songs like “ХАЛІВАР” and “Silence Sirens Storm” talk about things like trauma, stress, and how the conflict affects people. Even with all that emotional weight, Magua still manages to create from a really artistic and experimental place.

In the past few years, Magua has played shows in the UK and other parts of Europe, all while working on new music. After releasing the single “Laser” in August 2024, he's now sharing this new version of “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings.” It's like a bridge connecting his different influences, feelings, and new creative phases.
