Morris Northcutt

For Morris Northcutt, “Secret Garden” is more than a beautiful melody. It is a deeply personal reflection on grief, healing and the search for a place where life can begin to feel whole again. After losing his parents and several close friends, music became an essential source of strength. The trumpet, in particular, offered him something he describes as his own “garden”: a place to process loss, find comfort and keep moving forward.

His classical interpretation of Rolf Løvland’s beloved composition brings this personal connection into focus. Featuring lyrical solo trumpet alongside piano, viola, cello and double bass, the recording creates an intimate musical landscape built around emotion rather than technical display. Arranged and produced by Justo Morao, the piece allows the trumpet to take on the qualities of a human voice, with warm tones, expressive phrasing and a strong sense of intimacy.

Morris Northcutt

There is a quiet power in the way Northcutt approaches the composition. Rather than simply revisiting a familiar melody, he gives it a personal meaning shaped by his own experiences. Each phrase feels deliberate, allowing the music to breathe and creating space for listeners to bring their own memories and emotions into the experience.

Northcutt is an accomplished trumpet soloist whose work moves across classical, jazz and folk music. His artistic identity is also shaped by his cultural background as the son of a Korean immigrant, bringing together different influences in a musical career defined by versatility and curiosity.

His previous albums, Tonada and Moliendo Café, explore Venezuelan folk traditions through collaborations with Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated musicians, including Justo Morao, German Landaeta, Domingo Pagliuca and Edward Ramírez. These projects reveal another dimension of his artistry, connecting the expressive possibilities of the trumpet with the rhythms and melodies of Latin American music.

Beyond his solo recordings, Northcutt has contributed to soundtracks for video games and films, as well as recordings for lo-fi artist Davide Perico. His performance career has taken him to international stages, including an appearance as guest soloist with the Miami Symphony Orchestra.

He is also deeply involved in music education, presenting clinics for institutions and organisations such as the International Trumpet Guild, the Rafael Méndez International Brass Festival and the Washington Music Educators Association. He currently serves as Director of Tacoma Youth Symphony Brass, sharing his experience with the next generation of musicians.

As a Schilke Performing Artist and Clinician, Northcutt performs exclusively on Schilke trumpets. He is also a Voting Member of the Recording Academy, further reflecting his involvement in the wider music industry.

With “Secret Garden,” Morris Northcutt offers something more personal than a classical interpretation of a beloved composition. It is a reminder of how music can become a refuge during difficult moments, giving shape to emotions that words sometimes cannot express. For him, the trumpet is not simply an instrument; it is a place to return to, find strength and begin again.
