Some bands reinvent themselves. PURWIEN & KOWA apparently decided to do the opposite.

With “HINTER GLAS” (“BEHIND GLASS”), Christian Purwien revisits the work of his former band SECOND DECAY, bringing an old song back into the present with a new interpretation. It is an approach that comes with one obvious advantage: there is no need to search for a new songwriter, and the singer cannot complain about how the song is being interpreted.

The result feels less like a comeback and more like a school reunion. The familiar faces are still there, the old memories have not gone anywhere, and the songs apparently survived the years just fine. The only thing that has changed is the hair—or, in some cases, the complete lack of it.

That sense of self-awareness is part of what makes the return work. PURWIEN & KOWA are not pretending that the past needs to be reinvented into something unrecognizable. Instead, they seem perfectly comfortable looking back and asking a much simpler question: why make new mistakes when the old ones still work?

After a five-year musical break, the duo are back with the first single from their upcoming album SECHS: CONCORDE. During that time, they were far from inactive, having spent the years creating what became Germany’s most successful podcast about the 1980s.

Now they are returning to music with the same sense of humor and a clear connection to where they came from. “HINTER GLAS” turns that history into something new without trying to hide its age, making the comeback feel less like nostalgia and more like two musicians picking up an unfinished conversation.

Nobody asked for it. But PURWIEN & KOWA are back anyway—and apparently ready to take SECHS: CONCORDE wherever other bands were never planning to go.
