Rabbit on the Moon

"Amor” is a Spanish-language Latin pop song built around a relationship that began more than 20 years ago. Its story goes back to nights spent talking until sunrise, listening to love songs together and translating their meaning from Spanish into English. Years later, the man who once translated those songs for the woman he loved is now writing songs about her.

“I used to translate love songs for her; now I write them about her.”
The song is part of May 21: A Love Story, a 21-track autobiographical project created by Rabbit on the Moon. Each song looks at a different moment from more than two decades together, from falling in love and getting married to building a family and growing older side by side.

The story began on May 21, 2005, when the artist first saw the woman who would eventually become his wife. That date became the starting point for the entire project, with each of the 21 songs holding onto a particular memory, feeling, or chapter from the life they have shared.

But Rabbit on the Moon is about more than documenting a relationship. The project comes from a desire to leave something behind that can outlive the people who lived the story. The idea was partly inspired by monuments such as the Taj Mahal, which has allowed people centuries later to still recognize that a great love once existed.

Instead of stone or marble, Rabbit on the Moon is building that monument through music. The songs preserve small details that might otherwise disappear with time: conversations, memories, places, emotions, and the ordinary moments that make up a life together.

Maybe, years from now, someone who never knew either of them will hear one of these songs and understand that they were here. That they found each other. That they built a life together. And that they really did love one another.

21 songs. One love story. A thousand moments. And the story is still being written.
