særa

“We didn’t have a relationship. We had moments.”

With those words, særa captures the feeling at the heart of “bathtubs & cigarettes,” a song about the kind of connection that can feel incredibly intimate while remaining impossible to define. It's about being close to someone, sharing something that feels real, and then having to face the emptiness when that person is no longer there.

The song draws on images of steam, smoke and water, things that appear for a moment before slowly disappearing.

These details become a natural way to explore what people leave behind, even when a relationship never becomes something permanent. Sometimes, the memories remain long after the person has gone, and what once felt certain becomes difficult to explain.
For særa, music is also a way of finding freedom. The Budapest-based artist has chosen to move away from the expectations surrounding conventional careers and financial success, building a creative life on her own terms. Rather than following a path already laid out for her, she has made room to explore her identity through songwriting and performance.

Her collaboration with Hungarian producer, singer-songwriter and bassist NYPE has become an important part of that journey. What began as a student-teacher relationship has developed into a creative partnership, bringing together særa's guitar work and NYPE's bass-driven production. Having previously worked in London, NYPE brings his own musical experience to a collaboration that continues to evolve.

Together, they work from a basement studio in Budapest, a space where særa can experiment with her sound and explore the more vulnerable sides of her writing. As she expands her skills from guitar into bass, the partnership gives her room to grow without losing sight of what makes her music personal.

What makes “bathtubs & cigarettes” relatable is its understanding that not every meaningful connection comes with a clear definition. There are people who enter our lives briefly but leave an impression that lasts much longer than expected. There are moments that feel like the beginning of something, only to become memories instead.

The song doesn't need to turn that experience into a dramatic heartbreak story. Its strength lies in recognizing the contradiction itself: something can matter deeply without lasting forever.

And perhaps that is the hardest part of letting go. You aren't necessarily mourning a relationship you had, but the feeling you experienced, the possibilities you imagined and the moments you cannot quite recreate.

With “bathtubs & cigarettes,” særa gives that feeling a place to exist. Like smoke disappearing into the air, some connections leave no clear trace behind. Yet for a while, they were there, and that was enough to make them matter.

Sometimes, knowing someone is there is enough.
